University of the Philippines kept the women's fencing crown while University of the East remained king of fencing in the 66th UAAP championships. The Lady Maroons were as dominating in the two-day fencing competitions which sports ambassadress Akiko Thomson and Philippine Olympic Committee president Celso Dayrit opened at the Ateneo Blue Eagle gym last Saturday. The Lady Maroons staved off the bid of a UST team which settled for second for the second straight season. Virgie Nuestro made it a double of sorts for UP by running away with the Most Valuable Player trophy in the women's contest that saw basically the same finish by the six participating schools as last season-UE third, Ateneo fourth, FEU fifth and De La Salle sixth. UE held its ground in men's fencing, winning the title anew and seeing its ace fencer, Edmond Velez, a national team mainstay, bagging the MVP plum. FEU finished second anew while UST was third. Ateneo finished fourth to cause a minor shakeup at the bottom half of the table, relegating UP to fourth. Ateneo and De La Salle still stood at fifth and sixth.

Fencing got going at the PhilSports Fencing Hall in Pasig City yesterday with University of the East (UE), Far Eastern University (FEU) and UP sharing the first three individual gold medals. Edward Velez of UE nosed out Gian Carlo Nocom of University of Santo Tomas, 15-12, for the men’s sabre individual gold medal. A nother UE bet, Christian Canlas, fanned the school’s strong bid of retaining the men’s championship by bagging the bronze medal at the expense of UP’s Mac Ramiro, 15-14. FEU’s Avelino Victorino beat teammate and fellow national team member Almario Viscayno of UST, 15-6, to bag the men’s individual epee gold medal. Another national athlete, Wilredo Viscayno also of FEU clinched the bronze medal after beating Isagani Fabino Jr. of UP, 15-7. UP’s Dina Remolacio defeated teammate Katrina Esguerra, 15-11, for the women’s individual foil gold medal. UST’s Maricel Tacayon downed Anne Baylon of Ateneo, 15-10, in the battle for the bronze medal. Twelve gold medals are at stake in fencing. The team events in epee, foil and silver were played yesterday afternoon while the rest of the events are scheduled for today.
